>What is Networking

Computer networks consist of two or more computer systems, which are connected to each other in order to simplify file and information sharing. Before networks existed, users shared data by saving it to a diskette, which was then carried to and inserted in the floppy disc of another computer. In addition to information sharing, networks make businesses much more productive - organizations centralize information technology support and administration and spend less on software and hardware.

>Networks Types, based on size and geography...

- LANs (Local Area Networks) are usually networks built to meet the needs of a business office or a company and reside within one building or a complex of buildings. They consist of computers, which are connected together to share hardware, (fax, scanning, printing or copying machines) software, (Email applications, CRM solutions, etc.) data, (company's databases) and a connection to Internet.

- MANs (Metropolitan Area Networks) can cover a whole city, but are built on LANs. Example of MANs are cable internet and wireless phone services.

- WANs (Wide Area Networks) are public networks. They connect computer equipment over a very large geographic area. Usually they consist of a central host computer which does all the data processing and computers, which function as terminals, when they communicate with the host computer. Examples of WANs are the WorldWide Net and the Intranets of the large multinational companies.
